Loosely inspired by Carl Jung's theory of the collective unconscious, Shadow Puppets is a work that attempts to uncover and make sense of the various "selves" that culminate in the outward facing individual. This inner exploration is visualized through the mechanics of shadow puppetry, a choice that further mixes a child-like sense of curiosity with a state of deep self reflection. The work recognizes the fear of obscurity, asking whether we control our psychological shadows or if they control us.
The work also utilized an extremely complex casting system that required the dancers to shift roles every performance. This was done to both provide each of the students an opportunity to perform the front-facing solo role - especially considering the pedagogical benefits of such a mentally and physically demanding challenge - but also to allow each dancer to shift "selves" in real time; making each performance its own unique and real-time exploration of the concept as a whole.
